Some markets may provide product/services only after the authentication of costumer/client's digital identity. Besides the ones in the menu, other similar markets are the hotel industry (check-in/out), automotive (registration, financing), physical and logical access control, telecommunications, etc.

Identity represents public evidence for one who declares to be a certain subject. Within the digital sector, the identity determining WHO YOU ARE is proved by authentication credentials based on WHAT YOU KNOW, such as UserID and PassWord. PassWord alone is not a very safe credential, as it could be guessed or stolen by someone other than the User.In order to enhance safety, other credentials have been added based on WHAT YOU OWN - such as OTP,  magnetic cards or Smart Cards – or biometrics credentials based on WHAT YOU CAN DO such as image, voice, iris, fingerprints or signature.

The identity's storing process is defined Enrolment and it consists in the creation of an identity, or account, combined with its own credentials.

The safety level provided by the identity itself is related to the importance of the transaction it is involved in: the more the transaction is important, the more verification – or authentication – of the identity involved has to be safe.

Bio-Pen is primarily a "strong" system of four identification factors, which can determine the subject in relation to an electronic resource of a third party.

  • It verifies identity =                  WHO YOU ARE
  • It verifies UserID =                   WHAT YOU KNOW
  • It verifies PenID =                    WHAT YOU OWN
  • It verifies signature =                WHAT YOU CAN DO.

Bio-Pen authentication process employs safety features that are distributed among:

  • Pen's hardware
  • Pen's firmware
  • Software
  • Hosting system

And it allows the user's "strong" authentication and the mutual authentication between the latter and the host system.
